FREMONT, CA: Natural disasters cause environmental, economic, and human losses. Hurricanes, landslides, tornadoes, volcano eruptions, and wildfires are examples of these phenomena. Their detrimental effects can be avoided or lessened by public preparation. After natural disasters, GIS systems give important geographic data to emergency response teams. GIS is a valuable tool in disaster management. The program is designed to provide management and first responders with timely information at any stage of a natural disaster. HAZARD ANALYSIS OF HURRICANES BEFORE LANDFALL
Collecting usable GIS data before and after a large cyclone can significantly impact how a region recovers from wind, water, and storm damage. Compiling data for hazard mapping and rescue measures is a high priority in states such as Florida, the Carolinas, Louisiana, and Texas—and it makes a noticeable difference.
When Hurricane Irma made landfall in Key West, Florida, the city had a robust preparation strategy and a post-storm damage control plan in place. Before the storm came, city officials gathered map-based data from previous catastrophes to prepare.
Following the region's power outage, the data assisted in keeping relief activities flowing and officials strategizing on how to aid the disaster-strewn city's recovery.
City officials created a debris assessment using the Collector mobile application, which is included in Esri's ArcGIS software suite, to assess and score each vulnerability. They were able to drop a point on a map and detail the damage in that area, including images, using the application. This enabled them to dispatch FEMA and construction crews to the worst-affected areas.
Since then, the Emergency Operations Center in Key West has utilized ArcGIS to map the footprints of all of the city's buildings. By collecting data, the city may generate a live map of the city's buildings, streets, and even vegetation, allowing for faster and more accurate recording and reporting of future damage.
They intend to incorporate a crowdsourcing function in the future that will enable locals who remain during a storm to report damage using a streamlined approach.
GEO-SPECIFIC REGIONS IN THE DIRECTION OF MUDSLIDES
While the West Coast states do not face hurricanes, they face severe mudslides triggered by heavy rainfall, snow, or earthquakes. Geospatial software can be advantageous in these instances since it includes the following capabilities:
Demonstrate natural and potential debris flow in places prone to mudslides
Provide essential demographic data, such as population density, for afflicted locations.
Notify residents of impending risk
Demonstrate the effect of torrential rain or flooding on the terrain in a specific location.
With these data, residents can more correctly assess their safety, and rescue professionals can plan out and prioritize help to regions with the highest potential for danger or population concentration.
