Eligible vehicles that weigh less than 10,001 pounds are permitted by DMV that includes autonomous cargo vans, mid-size pickup trucks, and passenger cars carrying select goods, like groceries and pizza.
California’s move inspires other states, especially New York, where the idea of autonomous vehicles on the streets has long been a point of conflict for the city and state officials. Autonomous vehicles can save lives and time, thus in late 2017, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced General Motors and Cruise Automation to start testing autonomous vehicles on Manhattan streets in 2018.

The state positions at the forefront of the emerging AV industry, which has the potential to be the next significant technological advance that moves the state and economy forward.
Meanwhile, Mayor Bill de Blasio strongly opposes the deployment of autonomous vehicles onto busy Manhattan streets considering safety and a lack of coordination between the state and the city’s Department of Transportation and NYPD. He foresees the plan as a mistake and a danger.
While it will take time for autonomous vehicles to hit public roads in New York, an autonomous vehicle technology company, Optimus Ride launched the state’s first self-driving vehicle program. It was made effective in the past August in Brooklyn Navy Yard, a 300-acre industrial park that houses more than 400 businesses, employing more than 10,000 employees. These vehicles are currently confined to run within the private complex of Brooklyn Navy Yard with a safety driver and software operator. It will ensure that someone can take control of the self-driving vehicle when its software malfunctions.
