Fremont, CA: A large number of vehicles and devices that were running on gas are now easing into electrification, and this trend will continue in 2020 and beyond. The demand for electric vehicles is increasing with companies like Amazon are pledging to purchase delivery vehicles, and eventually, more electric vehicle models are being rolled out in the market. Meanwhile, in cities, transit agencies are demanding for electric buses. Nearly, all the vehicles ranging from forklifts and yard equipment to trucks and buses, and agricultural equipment are being electrified.
California is looking forward to taking the lead on mandating EVs for medium and heavy-duty uses like delivery vehicles and big rigs with the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The enormous growth of e-retail has sparked a need to accommodate more delivery vehicles, along with solutions for the traffic jam and the greenhouse gases emitted by these vehicles. A new electrified delivery solution will be electric cargo bikes used for the first and last-mile delivery of a product.
Another sizable disruption is caused by shared electric vehicles in urban transportation as cities find it tedious to manage these devices on public streets and sidewalks. This has led the stakeholders to reckon with routing activities, including collecting the scooters, charging them, and then redistributing the devices. To address this, companies are rolling out easy-to-deploy docking and charging pods for motorcycles. Also, they are setting a universal charging station resembling gas station. The docking and charging units, outfitted with a battery unit, charge the devices requiring minimal city infrastructure. This will avoid the overhead costs for scooter companies in gathering the devices every day, charging them and redistributing them at specific sites.
The personal electric car market is experiencing a leap as more models come online too. However, it is still a question whether it’s the next two or three years, or the next five years, or the next ten years for electric vehicles awash in cities. This is because EVs are yet to be enthusiastically embraced by the auto industry and also public in the U.S.
