The correctional facilities use new technologies to detect illegal items and make the environment safe easily.
FREMONT, CA: Today many criminals can arrange crimes on their behalf from prison with cell phones and other digital gadgets. Cell phones and electric chargers that power them are the new type of illegal imports, which the correctional facilities have to deal with regularly. The correction officers also have to control the prisoners' attempts to smuggle drugs and weapons into the institution.

To help the correctional managers detect illegal imports and create safer institutions, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is sponsoring various research projects and pilot programs based on recommendations from the experts to test a wide range of technologies. Technologies like scanning and detection devices can help the officers detect everything from a cell phone to a knife. Machines that utilize radio waves can even track the prisoners and every staff movement in the facility. The latest computer programs might also help the institutions to predict the area of the problem.
New Portable Scanner Spots Improvised Weapons
A millimeter-wave portal can recognize objects hidden under clothes even if they are large, fixed, and expensive. Correction officials have requested NIJ that they would like to use inexpensive handheld devices. Such devices will provide the officers with more flexibility so that they can screen people at the entrances and even spot checks anywhere and at any time. NIJ is investing in built handheld devices that can recognize everything from cell phones to Plexiglas.
Several correctional facilities have also mentioned that their metal detection system can work accurately, but they face difficulties while detecting non-metallic objects like innovative weapons made of wood or hard plastics. NIJ is also investing in companies that can build new devices to detect illegal items irrespective of their materials.
Tracking Prisoners and Pinpointing Prison Hotspots
The correction officers have also started to test new technologies that can help them to control other challenges. One of the crucial methods which they are using involves radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.
The device utilizes small transponders known as tags to track movement. These tags can be attached to or inserted in various objects like wristbands. The tag will have an integrated circuit and a small antennal that can handle radio signals and can be used with a network of sensors called RFID readers to track movements. The facilities can store the movement information in computers and use it for investigations to understand who was there in a specific part of the building at a certain time.
