Face recognition can be beneficial if implemented in the right way and for the right purposes .
FREMONT, CA: Enterprises employ the latest technologies, sometimes without regulation, which causes real and even imagined issues. It is still the same problem with technologies like face recognition and other fast-moving technologies with privacy implications like speakers and phones, GPS that tracks every move, and the social media platforms. However, particularly face recognition has become the present talk of the town.

Technologies that collect data about the public can create legitimate issues about civil liberties and privacy. But, the maximum of the problems with face recognition is about misunderstandings and partial truths. National Institute of Standards and Technology have released the Face Recognition Vendor Test that clearly says different face recognition system will have a different level of performance with diversified test group like age, race, and even sex.
Face recognition has some inbuilt complexities, so it becomes smooth and, for a few cases, advantageous for the stakeholders to misjudge the workings of the technology and its effect on privacy. However, face recognition provides immense opportunities that will improve the security and customer service in government as well as commercial applications. On the other hand, if the technology is implemented appropriately, then it can have a damaging effect on privacy and fairness.
If a country wants to benefit from the face recognition system, they have to develop safeguards and methods as it is necessary while introducing a new technology in society.
Improving the Performance
In recent years there has been immense improvement in the performance of facial recognition. The development has been powered by a vast expansion in computing speed and storage, along with fundamental transformation conducted in the algorithms and technology. It has also been forecasted that the quality will improve with time, but it is not possible to get a pitch-perfect performance from it. Therefore, it is necessary to control and govern the system and applications.
Applying New Uses
Several new face recognition applications are rising, and they are used in places starting from airport security to smartphones, computer gaming, customer service, and even for fraud prevention. Therefore, it has become indispensable to apply control and governance in this type of system architecture so that the technology can benefit at several levels of performance and also maintain transparency. It will also help the users to decide whether a new application is ready to be implemented and also provide the individuals' control of their private data.
Control of the Technology
The control of the technology systems can be applied in two ways first by knowing the tradeoffs and second by having the means to execute decisions about the several tradeoffs.
Having Good Governance
Good governance does not mean having a list of rules. Instead, good governance will identify the several features of the system, and due to this, they will make regulations so that the rules will genuinely prioritize the real problems. For the face recognition to work appropriately, the governance has to deal with the underlying issues like ownership, storage, data collection, aggregation, use, and retention.
There are three things that must happen. The first is, the developers and users of face recognition must understand that privacy policy is not an issue for the usefulness of the technology; instead, it is a means of making the technology more beneficial. Secondly, privacy advocates must understand that face recognition and other similar technologies are essential and unavoidable. It also serves as a positive force in developing privacy in the systems. Third, it is essential that every party work altogether and must have independent experts who can generate technical architectures that will permit reasonable governance and control of the technology to improve security.
