Citizens are becoming aware of the vast amount of data collected to bring their cities to a higher level of efficiency. This raises several issues and concerns about privacy in smart cities.
While the city governments technically belong to the sensors collecting aggregate and real-time data, they have been deployed by private companies. These private companies also harvest, store, and process the collected data. The exact types of data collected and what it is used for have very little clarity.

The key issue here is information asymmetry where a private, profit-making organization, or government body, knows and owns a lot of personal data, whereas individuals know little about a company or government entity. While this data is used to drive smart solutions, it can also potentially be used in other ways such as private firms could sell vast amounts of data to third parties without individual consent.
These people have no control over what data is being collected about them, nor do they know to whom it is being sold.

Smart cities have real potential to bring our crowded world into a new era in which people have more control over resource use, creating more sustainable living environments.
Smart cities are essential for sustainable urban development, and in order to function, they will need data. But data use needs to be transparent, accountable, and tailored to their citizens’ needs. Data privacy and security conversations need to be encouraged and addressed throughout smart cities. Keeping the citizens at the heart of these talks is most important for successful smart city development.
Although they undoubtedly improve citizens’ way of life, it is difficult to ignore the concerns about privacy in smart cities. Cities must, therefore, take adequate steps to ensure data privacy and security
